This summer I have been assisting with a team in Memphis. The team was not made up of super stars but of girls that simply wanted to play basketball. To make a long story short, they were players that the elite teams in Memphis felt did not belong on their team. To be honest those are the types of players I like to work with. They do not have the mentality that they know everything about basketball and can not be taught anything new. They just want to play and learn more.
During our first tournament, the team looked great. Although we did not win many games, we competed very well against top teams. However, after that tournament, something changed. We were not as competitive and looked very, very bad.
Over a period of time, those young ladies started to get better. It was little changes at first. They became confident. They did not get down on themselves for making mistakes. They took chances in their play. Their intensity increased. They became more competitive in games. The scores in the game loses were not as big anymore. They began to place in tournaments. I watched a young lady who was scared to get in a game. Take shots. The young lady came back to the bench and told me “Coach, I feel more confident now”.
As coaches, we continued to preach discipline, intensity and to keep working on improving.
What did these young ladies do?
The players did not quit. They continued to come to practice. They continued to listen to the coaches. They continued to ask questions. And they got better.
